Visaranai, written and directed by Vetrimaaran, the film features Attakathi Dinesh, Anandhi, Samuthirakani and Aadukalam Murugadoss in the leading roles. The film will compete in the Orizzonti section at the Venice International Film Festival (la Biennale di Venizia), which will begin in September. This is the first time a Tamil film has been selected for the competition section, which showcases trends in world cinema.
The trailer of the film, which is based on Chandra Kumar’s novel, Lock Up , prompted a debate on police brutality and high-handedness when it was uploaded on video-sharing sites a few months ago. It coincided with the killing of 20 Tamil wood cutters, allegedly red-sanders smugglers, by the Andhra police.
