The 90’s were my formative years when I went from being a child to a teenager. To me, the 90’s was a time of school, play and of course, movies. It occurred to me just how many movies I saw growing up – certainly not as many as I see now. Nevertheless, the greatest movie moments that are embedded in my mind are from the 90’s.
I get very nostalgic when I think about the time when I, along with my friends went to buy tickets for the movie “Minsara Kanavu”. I and the boys had to stand in the thick queue for about five long hours to get the tickets, occacionally getting pushed back by the big guys and even policemen, partly because we were just kids aged about 13 or 14. It may look like an ordeal but for the boys it was complete bliss. To me it was an unforgettable moment to step foot into the theater amidst all the whistle sounds and color papers thrown into the air in front of the screen as soon as the movie began. The audience were in a complete frenzy. Very rarely do we see such excitement in the audience nowadays. Sometimes I wonder that kids, these days are robbed of such experiences. Now with the advent of internet booking, getting tickets to a movie is just a click away.
I sometimes wonder how hearing a song like, “Mustafa Mustafa” from the film (Kadhal Desam – 96’) could completely transport you to a different era or is it only me? There are many songs which mesmerise you, but one would surely notice that only a few songs bring back memories and moments from the past. Memories like playing cricket on a sunny afternoon, walking on the streets filled with rainwater from the monsoons, the ringing sound of my school bell, the smell of old books from the library. These are moments with little or no significance when they actually occur back in time, but now these moments seem so precious.
